For me this book was just fun. It didn't need a super special unique villain, it didn't need a complicated plot. Because it had the one thing the movies have been lacking and that's the main characters interacting as people.
Rose and Rey teasing Poe, the three of them learning about each other, just cute moments that show character. It made the book so enjoyable for me.
There's nothing wrong with a straightforward plot, the world and creatures are something new, the interactions are like an oasis.
