Survive the Dome by Kosoko Jackson

3.0

"It looks like something out of a really bad young adult novel that was adapted into a movie..."

This quote from a character pretty much sums up my feelings.

Advertised by School Library Journal as Black Lives Matter meets the Hunger Games, Survive the Dome takes readers on a fast-paced, action-packed ride. You can really feel the raw, unfiltered pain and anger underlying the narrative. The dystopian Dome and police brutality inside feels disturbingly closer to reality than fiction.

I wanted to like this one so much more than I did. Kosoko Jackson is one of my favorite authors, and Kevin R Free is one of my favorite narrators. The premise is both timely and intriguing, but the story feels rushed and underdeveloped. The traditional YA tropes (e.g. insta love) felt super tropey and the frequent narrative inconsistencies were really distracting.
