The Happy Couple
by Naoise Dolan
The Happy Couple was a disappointment. One could hope it was meant to be an anti-romance, a critique of marriage or perhaps even monogamy, but that might be giving Dolan more credit than she deserves. I struggled to connect with the characters, all of whom felt unlikeable and underdeveloped, especially Luke, one of the protagonists. While I typically enjoy satirical fiction, the execution here fell flat. If The Happy Couple was intended as satire, it missed the mark.
