Follow the River
by CE Ricci
That was a huge what the fuck read.
I mean, Rain rapes River in the shower. It's not even the rape itself that is the most messed up thing but how it's handled after. While Rain feels guilt and regret for doing that (as he should, like what the fuck dude after what you have been through), Rain is like "hey nothing happened let's have sex again". I mean, it could be denial, and it would have been so interesting to further build the character on that. But nothing in his monologue shows his struggle with what happened to him and the rape is like some sort of little incident that washes over him. The writer could at least show a little bit of confusion, hurt and dismay. That's fucked up.
Then Rain opens up about the abuse he went through and the first idea River has is "time for Rain to bottom". Hell, I'm not against this kind of toxicity, but here it's shown as something romantic and passionate. No it's not, it's toxic as hell.
Other than that, the book struggle also with repetitions of interminable monologues. Nothing happens really. It's sex, long and repetitive monologues, then wash and repeat.
The book had a lot of potential and I loved the beginning. But it ended up in a mess I didn't expect. I won't read the next book.
