The Great Alone
by Kristin Hannah
I had convinced myself I wouldn’t enjoy Kristin Hannah novels - they seemed daunting to me. Mature, long and maybe boring. A good friend of mine told me she just read The Great Alone and it was 5 stars, the best book she’s read so far this year. It was available from my library so I figured why not.. I am a woman changed.
This book was beautifully written. I was completely hooked from the beginning, invested in Leni’s story and how it would unfold. The unforgiving wilderness of Alaska was the perfect place to test the limits of familial bonds, obsessive attachment, and undiagnosed mental illness. It is a book about love, loss, community and chosen family.
What a heart wrenching read. I haven’t properly cried reading a book in a while, but this one had me sobbing. It’s easy to point out the mistakes these characters make throughout their lives, and how they should have handled things differently, but I can’t imagine having to navigate any of it. My heart goes out to people who have dealt with any degree of domestic violence and feeling true fear in their own home at the hands of the people meant to love them the most.
