I don't know if Aira invented the shanytown's navigation method himself or if it's actually used in real shantytown's, but it was dead clever.
It's one of those 'everyone's connected' things like David Mitchell does, or that movie about globalization. It's very compact and well thought out, with none of the flights into the surreal that he's known for and that I haven't been able to appreciate anyway.
