Hard Times
by Charles Dickens, Jeff Nunokawa, Gage McWeeny
I really enjoyed this, but it’s far from my favorite Dickens. He is clearly taking aim at a very specific philosophy - utilitarianism - and all his satire, wit and plot revolve around that. It’s the shortest of his novels, so that was fun, to read one that has less characters and a straightforward plot. And there were some things that were very funny. I recommend it as an easy-reading classic with an interesting theme that’s got a little bit of everything and isn’t too heavy.
