Navigating Early by Clare Vanderpool
3.0

The waters of Maine, boats, the number Pi... you'll find they fill the pages of this intriguing book, set back in 1945. Jackie's mom dies suddenly, so his dad comes back from the Navy - only to pluck him out of his comfortable state of Kansas, all the way to a boarding school in Maine. The only boy he happens to befriend is named Early - and he's a little "off his rocker." Early gets to come and go to school as he pleases, because both of his parents are passed away. He gets very agitated when the math teacher talks about Pi having an end. He challenges this idea so much, that he ends up taking Jackie on an excursion in the waters surrounding Maine - searching for Pi…
Not my favorite, because I had to THINK so much. Probably good for the kids, though, especially those who have lost a parent or sibling. A good journey story for those who have lost someone close to them.
