Beartown by Fredrik Backman

i want to lie down and cry forever. this book took my fucking breath away.

i don't think this book would've worked for anyone who was a less talented writer, backman's writing is an absolute triumph. if this is just the english translation i can't imagine how beautiful it is in swedish.

this is a slow burn small town story about loyalty and the choices we all have to make to decide who we are as people, and starting from about 50% of the way in, i was on the verge crying the entire rest of the way. there are so many gorgeous lines, i swear it's every other line, but he just drops these heartbreaking sentences in like theyre nothing and moves on.

i can't actually say anything about the events that happen in this book bc i don't think i can do them justice, so this is mostly just me talking about how it made me feel. i love being caught off guard by books that i didn't expect to love so much, i just think this is absolutely stunning and can't recommend it enough. a beautifully written book about complex human beings, no black & white morals; beartown is steeped in grey.
