Dear Ijeawele, or A Feminist Manifesto in Fifteen Suggestions
by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie
I don't just recommend this book highly, I feel it is a necessary read- necessary for not just all mothers raising daughters, but for all people. Adichie offers such profound, rich insight into feminism with the simple premise. “I matter. I matter equally." And so I cried as I read this book. I cried because of the shame I have felt at aspects of my womanhood and fear that my daughters may feel shame too, but also the affirmation I felt at reading her words. Her discussion of power is noteworthy as well and important for men who are believe they are supporting the feminist cause, but are doing it from their position of power. Women don't need champions in a system of full equality- they can be champions in their own right.
