The War I Finally Won by Kimberly Brubaker Bradley

The joy of having a book pressed on you by a student! I don't know why she knew that I'd read the book of which this is a sequel, but she did, and she was herself reading The War That Saved My Life, and she loved it so much that she wanted me to read the sequel before she finished "Saved" so I could return it when she was ready for it.

I really liked The War That Saved My Life, depicting a young and uneducated girl's evacuation from a poverty-stricken and abusive household during WWII to a small village. The story continues from where the previous book left off, and while certain difficulties are resolved from the earlier story early in the book, Bradley makes it clear that trauma doesn't just go away, and that it takes a lot of work on the part of those who've been harmed, as well as playing for the long game by those who wish to support the healing.

I appreciated that Bradley showed how lack of education does not equate to lack of intelligence, but that lack of education leaves one vulnerable to misunderstanding fundamental aspects of the world.

It was a really enjoyable read, a worthy sequel.
