Imaginary Friend by Stephen Chbosky

3.5

Excellent story telling and imagery that really makes you feel sympathetic towards the main characters. The obvious love and deconstruction of Christianity is a treat; a bit on the nose at times but I think it’s meant to read that way. Some reviews here complained about the length, but I think it helps draw the reader into the world of Mill Creek.

There are a few moments where the dialogue seems a bit off… characters saying things that no one would really say in a conversation, or that copy and pasting sentences was easier than having characters speak differently. That brings me to what really bothered me. The formatting.

I get it’s cool, and I know why he does it, but it’s distracting and annoying to read. There are so many underlines, quotations and italics that it’s hard not jump around on the page, then when you get it the half way mark he dials it to 100. Random capitalizations, font changes, and symbols.

Another ‘negative’- it felt like a Stephen King book. I liked The Perks of Being A Wallflower(Go read that debut novel, much better than this) it had its own unique touch as an author. The entire time I read this I kept thinking ‘Man, this reads like a Stephen King Book’ and I would talk to my fiancé about how it isn’t necessarily bad, I just wanted something more… unique?

Get to the QA at the end of the book and he is talking about how much he appreciates King. And it shows.

All in all, I liked reading his take into horror, and I’m looking forward to another book from this Author to see what’s left in his “Trinity” before I cast my final judgement.
