Wundersmith: The Calling of Morrigan Crow by Jessica Townsend

5.0

“Morrigan didn’t like the sound of the Goal-Setting and Achieving Club for Highly Ambitious Youth, which met on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday evenings, and all day Sunday. But she thought she could probably get on board with Introverts Utterly Anonymous, which promised no meetings or gatherings of any sort, ever.” - (this quote sums me up as a person perfectly; who the hell would want to interact with humans any more than is necessary?).

This book is the sequel to Nevermoor and we continue with Morrigan Crow’s journey in this whimsical and fascinating world. Due to this being the second book in the series I will not be summing up what happens, as I am aware some people might be reading this who haven’t read/finished the first book, nobody likes a spoiler!

Why can’t I give this book more than 5 stars?

I did not think this book would live up to the amazing Nevermoor. BOY WAS I WRONG. Wundersmith was even better and it made me just fall in love even more with this fantastic, whimsical, beautiful world and magic system. I actually read this 400 page book in less than 24 hours, it would have been in one sitting if I hadn’t of had to be an adult and go to work (I know, awful circumstances), but I did start and finish it in one day as I COULD NOT PUT IT DOWN. This book continued to give me the feels of Harry Potter but also elements of another childhood favourite that is a Series of Unfortunate Events. I don’t want to expand on this through feels of spoiling but if you’ve read it I’m sure you know what I mean. I honestly feel that Townsend is slowly collecting all my favourite series and incorporating them into this series and it is just brilliant. Whilst I feel that Nevermoor was more of a “world-building” book in the series, Wundersmith was jam packed with action and exciting plot twists whilst also continuing to build on the world and magic system. I also feel like we saw Morrigan grow as a character, which made me love her even more. I am just in awe of Jessica Townsend and her wonderful writing. I honestly cannot wait for the next book and I really do hope that we get a release date soon because I just need more. I’m going to very boldly state that this is the best new series that I have read this year. Everybody in the whole damn world need to get on this very much deserved hype and read this series.
