Treasure Island
by Robert Louis Stevenson
Treasure Island was both iconic and surprising (i.e., it apparently debuted the concept of treasure maps marked with an X, among other seafaring tropes.) The dialogue was witty and captivating and the saga action-packed, complete with several life and death scenarios. Robert Louis Stevenson's coming-of-age adventure is notably masculine - the only two women mentioned are a fainting mother and an illicit partner - but I digress. We're meant to suspend disbelief of teen Jim Hawkin's prowess in all things as he joins a crew aboard the HISPANOLIA and sets sail to find buried treasure. 3.5/5 stars.
