I loved everything about this atmospheric low fantasy novel: the train setting, the omnipresent undercurrent of dread, and the Russian/Chinese duality. And even though I'm not sure if this is what the author intended to do, the book read like an allegory on both turn-of-the-century industrialization and the present-day climate crisis.
