This is one of the best book I’ve ever read.

Don’t let the page count intimidate you - it’s worth every single paragraph. It’s one of those rare instances where a book couldn’t have been shorter. It simply needed the 500 pages to tell you this very complex and epic story. I found each and every page interesting, though I’m sure it can be considered a slow and boring book.

It has made me care about etymology, which is something I wouldn’t have guessed. But other than that, it delves into politics, race and racism, our homelands, corruption, power, class, the British empire, and so much more.

It is most definitely a complex book (the massive and numerous footnotes can attest to that), and I would recommend reading with your full attention and not skimming anything. :)

“It seemed both proper and at the same time deeply unfair that so much of life was left to chance.”

Did not finish book. Stopped at 11%.
Got grossed out by the first chapter. I need to be in a special kind of mindset to read about a son spying on his naked mother having s3x. Might read it at another time, but judging by the reviews, I’m not missing much.

It takes a while to get going, and it felt like reading someone’s diary, but it’s someone you have no interest in.

The last third of the book is where I started liking it more, and I’d say the ending is interesting. I guess I just expected more

It’s not bad by any means, great probably, just not a 5 star.

If you’re in a mood for a book exploring womanhood in a dystopian setting 👏☝️

Loved every single paragraph.

My biggest compliment for this book is that you can SO tell it was written by a woman.

Just full of absolutely beautiful and sad parts of being women, and most importantly, being women together.

Not very action-filled, keep that in mind.

It started out good, and I just completely lost interest later on.

The writing is good though.

Maybe I’ll come back to it. :)

Don’t read this if you don’t like unlikable main characters. Like, just don’t. You will hate every second of it.

On the other hand, if you like reading someone’s thoughts and being inside their mind, this is for you.

It’s definitely very weird. It’s all based in the narrator’s mind, we never read her dialogue (except her messages) just her thoughts - we see what she wants to say, not what she actually said or how she said it, which I find interesting.

A lot of people don’t like “the crack”, which seems like a very weird plot point of an alternate reality, BUT if you read it knowing it’s supposed to represent the Covid pandemic, it makes a lot more sense. I feel like that makes a huge difference in whether you like the book or not.

By the end of the book, it kind of goes off the rails, and it feels like the author didn’t know how to end the plot (there was none), so she just kind of left it at a random point.

It’s a fine book, especially since it’s a debut novel, but definitely not something you *have* to read. It has some very relatable elements, which are saviors of this book, but not that much more.
