non fiction is so not for me. that’s okay, it was interesting at times, maybe i will get back to it eventually. when i read other things i did think back on his writings, and if smile when i did, like “huh, that’s what oscar said!”.

great book to ‘study’ writing, very descriptive. felt droning during the history parts, but that’s just me. a nice read!

despite it being a children’s book, i think any adult should read this. i knew about apartheid in south africa, but only on the surface level. i only understood it as segregation, which comes with its injustices in many ways, but this served not only as a reminder but also how it worked in other countries. very eye opening.

While the writing was good, it was just boring. Not for me.

I read this when I was twelve. Back then I took ballet lessons and even got awarded a scholarship to go to London on a two week trip to a dance school. As part of the course, we got to be taught by various teachers from different schools around the globe… one of them was Michaela DePrince.

As a mixed girl in ballet, I wouldn’t say I faced many hardships as she did, but the book made me feel somewhat less alone in the fact that I was probably the only poc in my ballet school. It wasn’t something that made me feel cast out, but every time I’d realise that, it always shocked me.

This book was so moving and I think was the first book to ever make me cry. I got so hooked to this book because of how captivating her story is.

I remember reading this back when I was 11 years old I think? I definitely remember reading this book ne getting hooked onto it, though I never felt hooked to the second book in the series.

This was a cute read overall, something my mum recommended to me since she had read it when she was young.

Read this with an audiobook which helped bring it to life. Sweet read overall.
