I liked it at the beginning but in ch 6 the mmc acted so jealous and caveman-like and it was very bad. So out of proportion and unrealistic, it was pretty bad (they had hooked up in the gym, she doesn't want to see him anymore and he goes bat shit crazy, and while he is angry her friend just leaves her alone to deal with itl). Huge turn off. And when they meet in a later scene, same chapter he says:
No, hear me out. You need to know… you’re naturally submissive during sex.”
My eyes meet his.
“Vanilla, passive sex will never do it for you.” He shrugs. “It just won’t.”
“You don’t know what you’re talking about. I love normal sex, Brock, in a bed with someone I love.”
“Maybe, but you also need to be taken and loved hard. You enjoyed it ,Tully. I know you did. You came so hard you nearly snapped my dick off. Why don’t you just admit the truth to yourself?”
I don't know about anybody else but this is the opposite of sexy. I'm thinking of dnfing it.
And the fmc is not much better she's like a pendulum: always alternating between being sexually liberated and feeling guilty about it.
This book is not terrible, it has many aspects that should make me like it but this author/writing style and I don't get along, at all. too over the top
If you liked this I would recommend JT Gessinger, that I like
Laura lee guhrke writes the kind of historical romance novels that I want to read. This one was a pleasant one, even id not a remarkable one. I preferred the first half to the second one. Mistreated free spirited divorcee in forced proximity (the two of them seek eachother, she agrees to help him find a wife) with the man who compromised her (it was under her machinations). There is animosity between the two of them but even more attraction.
Usually I despise flashbacks but here they were very cute (and few)
I appreciate the topic and the setting but I did not feel an ounce of the romance. The story was interesting, the execution wasn't spectacular but still an enjoyable read.
I was down for India as the setting and the focus on a brothel. I feel like this author is able to show the negative aspects of cultures (the violence in criminal groups, the misogyny, backwards views of thinking of some cultures, expecially in their elders) meanwhile not looking down at them and portraying them also in a good light. In the brothel there were shown good people and bad people (and the antagonists, even if villanous also seemed like just people).
I cannot get behind this author love stories though. I don't feel the chemestry at all. The mcs like (and end up loving) eachother just because. The fmc was a bit bland and the mmc, even though he worked for a brothel and he stole girls, was shown in a too empathetic way. Yes, he was also mistreated and he had to reckon (thanks to what other characters said to him) with the knowledge that what he was doing was not good but he was shown too much as a victim for my liking. Expecially because for most of the book I couldn't see him as a love interest due to him being a bad person. I liked seeing him as the abductor at the beginning but I would have liked to see him a better person sooner. This regarding what I like to read in my romance books, the author portrayed a more realistic situation.
If you like to see big character growth for the mmc and a resilient fmc this book might be for you.
As per usual with this author books I really like the beginning, very atmospheric and tense (he abducts her and we see from her pov the shock of entering a brothel), then the middle part is boring and the relationship that should be developed is lackluster, and then the last part has conflict and tension. I appreciated how the mmc had to stay put (maybe not the most heroic but it felt necessary to me) but I hated how well things went for the heroine, the author provided a good reason but I despise when the book is sold on the fact that it deals with prostitution but there is always a cop out/ it's her first client (the latter not being a part of this book). Sex slavery is horrible and I often cannot stomach reading about it but irkes me when this happens.
The novel is set in India but both of the main characters are light skinned (motivated), this was talked about in the book but I felt like it could have been handled differently, the mcs did not acknowledge how it could have benefitted them (white person speaking, make of it what you will).
So this is my kind of book, mafia new adult with some real/gritty parts while being pretty light at the same time.
A book with great potential that I loved at the beginning but that turned up to be mediocre overall. Forgettable but an entertaining read nevertheless.
This book could be divided in thirds:
I ADORED the first part. Complete love. You follow the fmc from when she was a child in a war thorn Albania and then it switches to her collage experience as an immigrant. The link with the mmc is always there but they haven't met again. You follow her and her friends while they are having a fling with a rock band. I truly loved this part, 5 stars, the world that is described is realistic and politics are talked about (her family being part of the albanian resistance, life as immigrants in the us, relationship between townies and collage students) there is a tense atmosphere when she talks about the mafia and the prospect of seeing the mmc is almost ominous. (Their first meeting again scene was the only (almost) sex scene that I really enjoyed in this book)
But then they actually meet again and it lost all of it's originality and turns into the standard kidnapped (it made no sense whatsoever), fake marriage/relationship to help her brother. Followed by shopping montage and lavish trip. Oh, and obviously they have been in love since they were young (the age gap us not huge she was 10 and he 18 but he held her when she was born and he has always been too protective and obsessed with her, it made he relationship uncomfortable for me) and it turns into a real relationship during the trip. I hated how long they waited to have penetrative sex and only masturbated/touched eachother for so many scenes. I am not a fan of second chance/childhood friends to lovers trope so I did not like their relationship, expecially because it became too sweet, bland and generic during the trip
But remember we need a third act almost break up so we have to make them fight (it is a trope that I am keen on). We have her loyalties put to question and him acting coldly. Then an action scene and a quick resolution (an almost too nice ending for her family, even though I believe that her mother was correct in being against their relationship) Even though I did not love this section as much as the first one it was nice.
The writing wasn't bad but I found all of the characters annoying and unrealistic, I felt no chemestry between the couple and I didn't like the direction that the book was going towards. I truly loved the texting bits but I don't think that I would love it's evolution.
I disliked how much the author was keeping from the reader (she does this often) and it defeated the purpose of having a dual pow.
I read dark romances but I dislike sexual captivity/slavery stories (I find them too hard to read. This one was not that dark though).
This is just the beginning of a long series and the dynamic between the two mcs was pretty slow burning. They are attracted to eachother, they intend to use eachother, they have developed no feelings toward eachother. Wich is perfectly good for the pacing of the series but it was a no go for me.
The series is definitely a dark series but it's not too dark, there is for sure sexual content but not as much as you might think (con and non con, you feel for the poor girl, it's not sexy at all, but it isn't too graphic (while still being described).
There is a bit of a strange relationship between the fmc and her twin brother: nothing is really going on but the press speculate incest, she say that she would marry him and in a phone call he say that she should be spanked.
The fmc at the beginning said that she I didn't believe in self pleasuring and I almost threw my kindle.
I had do force myself to read the book after she went to England and it was a chore.
I hope that Giana Darling has mentioned being inspired by this book in the acknowledgement of Enthralled because it is like she read this and then thought, let me rewrite this keeping everything almost the same but make it bdsm.
(The ending also reminded me of a Nikki Sloane book but it was just a scene)
It read as upper ya fantasy (with a hint of a romance subplot), not bad at all but not something that I enjoy reading anymore. (I thought it was going to be a fantasy romance but it ended up being a fantasy book so the pacing as a slower, the world building a bit more complex and political. So I dnfed, but it wasn't bad).
This is a good historical romance. It did not have characters, tropes and a depth of emotions that spoke to my sensibilities. Pleasant, well written, recommendable but forgettable
I red this after having seen the movie trailer. I liked the tropes (angry and hurt cheated on girl, boxing both fmc amd mmc) but at the same time I never find new adult books mature enough. And the writing style here (even if it was good) was so new adult.
I despise when there is a sad over the top backstory that explains why a character is broken. Stopped at the end of ch 24 after their first sex scene and his backstory revelation. I had stopped caring 10 ch before.
Not a bad new adult romance (middle of the road but recommendable) but not a book for me
