Because Fuck Paul

(2.5/5 stars)

Audiobook

This book had a really great premise and I was super interested to pick it up. I thought it was okay, a decent read, EXCEPT the fact that this book HEAVILY romanticizes teacher-student relationships, something I really do not like or support.

This story follows seven different points of view, each meant to represent one of the deadly sins. The story starts with a teacher-student relationship being brought to light at the high school, only no one knows who the teacher or the student is. The book then follows the seven perspectives of seven different students, all dealing with their own issues, as well as wondering who could be in this relationship.

I felt the overall story was done quite well. I really enjoy character driven books, and I found this to be highly character driven. However, there were so many side plots that I found the main plot (the teacher-student relationship) to fall away, only to be picked up later when it was necessary to resolve a plot point. I found the side plots to occasionally be more fleshed out than the main plot, not that I didn't enjoy the side plots, I typically enjoyed them more than the main plot.

This book has great pansexual rep, as well as really good asexual/aromantic rep. One is identified in the story, and the other is not. Some characters I really enjoyed, while others I felt to be annoying and I didn't want to hear from their perspectives at all. The teacher-student relationship is pretty randomly done, I have to say. It also seems as though the author was trying to make the relationship acceptable, through loopholes and such. But I just wasn't here for it at all.

If this is something you want to read, I recommend picking up the audiobook. Each character is voiced by a different actor and I felt them all to really represent the character they were narrating. It was also interesting to hear how each character would speak another characters dialogue, I found that gave some insight into how the other characters felt they sounded.

Update 2021: 1.5-2/5 stars. I preach all the time on my Instagram how problematic this book is since I had time to sit with it and I figured it was probably time to reflect that in my goodreads review. The way the author treats mental illness in this book, is not okay with me.

This was an enjoyable read for me and I devoured most of it in one sitting (maybe read ~50 pages prior). This is a YA thriller-retelling of The Breakfast Club. I love The Breakfast Club and I love when people retell it with a mystery/thriller twist, it's basically an automatic read from me.

This story follows four teens who end up in detention with the student that runs the resident gossip site. However, this student is killed during detention and the story focuses on these four teens, and now suspects, and how they navigate the aftermath of this event.

My major issue with this book was that it was more of a YA contemporary than a mystery/thriller. I didn't really have an "OMG I did not see that coming" moments. There was a definite mystery aspect to story, however I was fairly easily able to figure out the ending. And I did find the reveal of the ending in the book a little lacklustre as well, not only because I saw it coming. I also have to say I was not happy with the ending of the book, and I was not happy with the epilogue either.

All-in-all this was an enjoyable read, and I did, like I said, read the majority in one sitting, however I believe it could be more suspenseful, and maybe less predictable.

[2.5/5 stars]

So here's the thing, I don't have a quote as I normally do because nothing in the book was even worth remembering. I guessed every, single twist.

I had high expectations going into this thriller as I had been hearing some great things about it, especially that the twists are great, which is something I struggle to find in a thriller. However, this thriller was no exception.

First off, let me say that I understand that it was a debut novel and I definitely see the potential and this author can definitely improve and produce fantastic work. This just wasn't it for me. It's a thriller so I'm not going to give a plot synopsis, as I believe you should go into it knowing as little as possible.

The first, I would say, two thirds of this book are incredibly slow and almost nothing happens. Then the ending seems to happen all at once within the span of maybe forty pages. I really didn't care about anything that was happening, I wasn't invested in any of the characters. And in the end I had every twist already predicted, thus I was denied the shock-factor I seek from thrillers.

My main issue when completing this book, was that I found there to be a gaping hole where something is left completely unresolved. Throughout this novel, on multiple occasions
SpoilerQuincy completely breaks out of her reality and enters into a psychotic rage, she blacks out and once almost murders Sam, and then also beats a man into a coma, all while explaining how she doesn't realize what's happening, and she blacks out and can't remember how she got from point A to point B. This is literally never resolved, she never seeks professional help for this and someone else ends up incarcerated for beating the man.

I read this book in one sitting, it was a book club book, and I felt entertained enough to get to the end, but I felt as though if I put it down I would not pick it back up. Perhaps this could be a good thriller if you do not see the plot twists coming, but I found it to be underwhelming at best.
