you may
not have left
(many) bruises
on my skin,
but you left giant
blackberry bruises
all over
my soul.
CW: eating disorders, depression, death, suicide, child abuse, partner abuse, bullying, sexual assault, queerphobia, menstruation, alcoholism, trauma, racism, fire, cancer, possibly more.
There is a Trigger Warning list located in the first two pages of the collection.
This was a collection I was incredibly hesitant to pick up because I had heard such mixed things about it. I heard that it was one of the worse collections of modern poetry and was extremely anti-feminist. However, I have to say I disagree with these critiques. Now I will be clear, this is modern poetry. Therefore, if you do not like tumblr-esque poetry, there is a large chance you will not like this.
I read this entire collection, in one sitting, in my car. I found myself relating to so many poems in this collection, and some will stay with me for a long time. However, I found there were some aspects I just couldn't relate to, which is not the fault of the author. This is why I ultimately gave the collection a 4, instead of a 5. But I feel as though this is something that affects all collections, as it is rare that many will be able to relate to everything written, especially in this case when such a wide variety of subjects is covered.
Overall, I would recommend this collection if you are a fan of modern poetry, as long as the content isn't triggering to you, I found some of the content that I can relate to, hard to read at times. I believe this is definitely a collection that people can benefit from, and I am excited to read the next collection by the author.

It was time to teach them a lesson. Time to show them a thing or two. She giggled hysterically.
This book was fantastic. I really enjoyed it, despite knowing, for the most part, how everything was going to end. This is the first King book I've ever read, and, honestly, I think it will be a favourite through reading more.
The main part of this book that I really enjoyed was the writing style. King's writing style is truly unlike anything I've ever read before. He builds a world like nothing I've ever experienced. The story also has additional elements, including interviews and newspaper articles following the events at the end of the book. I found that it added so much more to the story, especially since virtually everyone knows the story of Carrie.
Everyone talks about King's endings, but I did not find this ending to be horrible, it wasn't exceptional by any means, but it definitely wasn't a bad ending.
I gave it a 4.5 rather than a 5, simply because it did not have the suspense I suspected from a King novel. This could be because I already knew the ending, but I still didn't feel right knowing it wasn't a 5 star read for me.
This was definitely a great introduction to King as an author and I highly recommend it to anyone looking to read some less intimidating King. I am excited to keep reading more of his works!

The theme of prom is midnight magic and yet it ends at ten p.m.! It doesn't even make sense!
This was a super fun graphic novel. It follows Jonesy, a teenage cupid who can make anyone fall in love with anything, except her powers don't work on herself. She is also super spunky, and very cynical.
I really enjoyed the art style of this, it was really colourful and it's drawn in the cartoony way that I enjoy. And the dialogue is super fun.
Also Rocky is my favourite character.
I would definitely recommend this if you're looking for something super fun, without a lot of depth. I am anticipating continuing on with this series.

This is quite possibly the worst book I've ever read
There is nothing redeemable about this book, it had an interesting premise but it wasn't executed well. The story claims to follow five high school seniors, each faced with a life-changing decision, and then the story follows what happens when they choose option A, and what happens when they choose option B, in alternate storylines.
First off, the layout of the book I found to be extremely confusing and very poorly executed. It goes back and forth throughout the seasons of the senior year, but I found myself getting confused as to what happened in each storyline. I couldn't remember if certain characters were speaking with each other, I couldn't remember who was dating who at that particular time. It was all just really confusing, and in the end I felt it didn't even matter if I could differentiate between the two.
Second, I didn't like or feel a connection to any of the characters. They all felt very flat with one characteristic to describe who they were. There was one character, Brian, who literally said he was fat so many times all I could think was okay, we get it, you're fat. It wasn't strictly positive or negative, it varied each time. I didn't find any of the characters to be redeemable, I wasn't rooting for any of them.
Thirdly, I didn't give a damn about the plot, I had no idea what was happening 90% of the time, and I really didn't care about it either. Throughout the book, they are working toward graduation, which I didn't really know until I finished the book, but the author introduces everything completely out of the blue like I was to simply assume they were going to happen because of the synopsis of the story.
Fourthly, the writing left much to be desired. The narration doesn’t even seem to vary from character to character. And if you see the quotes I’ve given from this book as I was reading it, you can see why I was eye-rolling the majority of the time reading it. I just didn’t feel the writing was done well at all. It seemed, at times, to be written by an immature, stereotypical high school male, but not in a way that made you relate to the male characters at all.
Lastly, I felt as though there were many things mishandled in the writing of this book. The main thing being mental health/suicide. There are many storylines that deal with these subjects and half the time they are just offensive, and the other half it seems as though the author got all their information from after-school specials written in the 80s despite the fact it was written in 2017. I mean, there is a point where an attempted suicide is used as a joke, and another where an attempted suicide literally comes straight out of nowhere. The 'r-word' is used at least four times throughout this novel, and is used simply as a way to describe a character. It is never condemned.
In conclusion, I really did not like any aspect of this book. I would not recommend it to anyone, and honestly I am confused how it was published the way it is.

"You see it in all animals - the female of the species is more deadly than the male"
CW: Sexual Assault, Rape, Animal Abuse
This book was phenomenal. I have rarely felt so many emotions while reading a book. It is a horrible look that takes a very real look at sexual assault and rape culture in society. But it is just such an important story that everyone should really experience.
The story alternates between three points of view: Alex, whose sister was raped and murdered; Jack, one of the popular guys; and Peekay, the Preacher's kid who wants to be known as anything but. I can't really describe the plot more than this because this book needs to be experienced without knowing much.
I didn't find Jack to be too likeable of a character, I wasn't sure if I was supposed to like him or not, but it didn't affect my overall experience of the story. I did, however, find him important to the story. He was a male point of view that is integral to the plot. Peekay was also incredible and also a different point of view, integral to the plot. Her's being the "brainwashed" teenage girl.
Alex, on the other hand, gave an all-too-real look into rape culture in society with her blunt, to-the-point, comments. All I can do is give some of my favourite quotes:
Physical attractiveness has nothing to do with it. You were alone, isolated, and weak.
It doesn't matter. What you were wearing. What you look like. Nothing. Watch the nature channel. Predators go for the easy prey.
But 'boys will be boys', out favourite phrase that excuses so many things, while the only thing we have have to the opposite gender is 'women', said with disdain and punctuated with an eye roll.
This book is a truly difficult book that everyone should read. It is a jarring, honest look at rape culture that is so important to both males and females. This is one that will stay with me for a while.

I don't think she meant, 'Burn the place down' when she said 'tidy up'
Some things can only be cleansed with FIRE
This was a enjoyable second volume to the I Hate Fairyland series. It followed up the first volume with the same colorful artwork and gore that I loved from the first volume.
That being said, not much happened in this volume I found, it moreso seems like the next volume will be fantastic because this volume gave it a good build up. Not that there is anything wrong with that, I still enjoyed it.
Gertrude is still destroying things, and Larry is still hilarious to me. I will definitely be continuing on with the series, as I still find it an enjoyable, light read.

Do you even know what kinds of creatures could be living in the shallows here? DO YOU EVEN KNOW? PIRANHAS! BLOOD-SUCKING CATFISH! OR WORSE! Do you WANT your body to be drained of all its fluids?!
She watches a lot of the Discovery Channel.
The river monsters are everywhere. We're never safe!
I adored this graphic novel for the following reasons:
The art style is fantastic
The plot is intriguing
The dialogue is hilarious
There is literally not one character I dislike
FEMINISM
Lovely female-female romance
Instead of 'what the hell' or 'oh my God' they say 'what the *insert powerful woman here*'
This story is an absolute delight, I immediately purchased the rest of the volumes that are currently out and plan on reading them all incredibly soon. But also wanting to drag them out so I can savour until the next release. I would highly recommend if you're looking for a good graphic novel, or a good feminist read.

“You know who will never judge me?” Zack asked in lieu of an answer. “Pasta. Pasta will never judge me.”
This was a delightfully smutty read. One of the better new adult books I've read. It even had me feeling feelings at times which I wasn't prepared for. All in all I really enjoyed it.
This story follows Zack, a sex phone operator at Murmur Inc. While at work he receives a phone call from a man know as John, and their connection is immediate. John becomes a regular of Zack's and through it all they end up meeting.
One of the most interesting parts of this story for me was the insight into the world of sex workers. I personally can't speak to its accuracy, however. It was interesting to see it as portrayed as a somewhat positive thing, as the employees continued to defend their career choices.
I found the sexy scenes to be pretty well done. I didn't have any glaring problems with anything. Once again I cannot speak to the representation.
I found the narration and writing to be pretty hilarious as well. More than once, I found myself laughing at something that was said. It was, very much so, my type of humour.
I didn't really have any huge issues with this book. It is a smutty book with not too much of a plot. The characters could also be kinda horrible at times.
Overall I found this book to be enjoyable, and I would definitely recommend if you are looking for a new adult, M-M, romance. I definitely plan on reading the other books in this series to see the different (hopefully positive) portrayals of other aspects of the sex industry.
