i liked that it was set somewhere i’d been before. it was beautiful but very simple.

i feel like this was almost SO GOOD but it was such an uncomfortable  and violent read that whatever point the author was making was overshadowed by how much i hated every single character.

this is not a memoir in the sense that there’s a follow through narrative, nor is joan herself very present. it’s more of a collection of essays, telling you about certain political or cultural moments that shaped her life so you get a sense of what it’s like to live in 1960s america. how engaging this is then depends entirely on whether you’re interested in that specific information: a communist called micheal? no. the effects of pearl harbour on honolulu? no. a famous murder trial? yes. drug culture in sacramento? yes. it’s a mixed bag.
