I could’ve been kind and given it 2 stars for prose but I asked Attenberg a question about page 134 and she blocked me on bluesky! I emailed her representative at Harper Collins. Stay tuned for a response.

I was at a solid 4 but the literal last turn of the book was jaw dropping I have to give it a 5. Sager earned his flowers.

I wasn’t sure who the culprit was going to be! The last chapter I was near tears; it wraps up very nicely after a long ride.

“Who owns our stories?” is beautifully asked in this novel. Do observers come in with genuine intentions of documenting a simple lifestyle to show cosmopolitan readers? Do observers write only to fabricate and elaborate the stories they tell as if their subjects are zoo animals? That’s for you to sit with.

The ending twist is so bizarre and doesn’t resolve the story well.
