I just really enjoyed this book. The pacing was done really well for what felt like a lengthy listen and read. The audio narrator is excellent. I found the characters to be interesting and exciting. I loved the unexpected plot. I felt the ending wasn’t rushed, it was just a great read unlike anything I’ve read before
Own voices story with some lgtbq+ rep Slow paced feels like historical fiction ya with elements of horror/gore. Heavy political socieoeconomics for the time with xenophobic connotations and multiculturalism within Shanghai. Really well written. You can tell the author loves the city. Doesn’t really read like fantasy. Minimal romance. Pace really picks up in the last seven or so chapters when everything comes together. Didn’t feel much connection to the main characters who are morally grey but side characters Kathleen, Marshall and Alisa are really likeable and interesting. I liked learning their stories.
Content warning: drug use Very easy reading Predictable plot Quick read Ideal holiday read or something that doesn’t require a lot of focus I enjoyed it to get me back into the swing of reading Characters are fine, bit chosen one trope Some smut 75% of the way through
