What Lies in the Woods by Kate Alice Marshall
Honestly this is not a favorite.
Whenever I picked up the book I had to push myself to get into it, but when i was into it I could fly through.
My problems lie entirely on the structure and plot of the story. The writing is good, it’s engaging enough, that’s not the problem.
It felt like for 300 pages nothing happened, not even a tiny surprise and then in one chapter we find out a fake identity, a secret affair, and who the would-be murderer was and how 7 people that were “good” are now the evil ones of the story.
It felt like the author had to explain the ending twist, like points that should have been sprinkled throughout the entire story weren’t and the author tried to pretend that they were and that the plot made sense.
A lot of it could have been predictable, but honestly everything felt so jumbled that i didn’t know left from right.
I saw a review that said that there were so many characters she forgot who people were at times and honestly yes. I saw a mention in one of the latest chapters about “Percy” and i said who?
It also feels like a lot of plot points aren’t tied up, or the idea was there and then she abandoned them (more likely forgot them).
This would be a 2 stars based on plot, characters, pacing, and structure, however, the writing was engaging and i could knock out pages super fast. While I wasn’t actually really invested in the characters (other than Liv and they ruined her…) it was hard to put down the book once i got into it because i really did want to see the clues and the overall big solving of the mystery.
I’m rounding up because this is definitely not the worst book i’ve read, but I feel like the writing style doesn’t give a whole extra star, so for me this book fell flat at 2.5.
ONE BIG THING I FORGOT: the romance, ridiculous. it was nice at first, nice little super unnecessary side plot, and eventually used for a twist, but you would expect the ending of a mystery/thriller to have closure about the mystery, instead we leave off on a half-assed reconnection/apology and her forgiving a guy who slept with her while lying about his identity?
this book didn’t need even a bit of romance and it definitely didn’t need to end on a “romantic” note.
