When I first saw Illuminae I was drawn in by the cover. I don’t know if it was the right colors or the blacked out phrases but just by one look I knew I had to read this book. Then I saw the authors. I am not familiar with Amie Kaufman, however, I had tried to read a Jay Kristoff book before… keyword… tried.
I finally decided to read the ebook version. Which was a bit of a mistake. It’s super laggy and didn’t do the book and it’s creative pages justice. But enough about that, let’s get on to the book.
To be honest. At first I was disappointed. The story wasn’t grabbing me and neither were the characters. I trudged through though, reading every caption and diagram, overloading my brain with information there was no way I could remember, and then it all clicked. Everything was processed and I wasn’t feeling overwhelmed and my brain finally brought together this beautiful and complex world.
Kady Grant, who began as a typical angsty teen, turned into a brilliant, smart and cunning heroine. Someone who had gone through so much and lost everything, but still kept going. She quickly realizes there is much more to the attack that happened on her home planet and on the other ship that was housing refugees, one of them being her mother. The command that is supposed to keep them safe is hiding secrets that she plans to find out.
Ezra Mason is Kady’s not so ex-boyfriend. He was content to stay forever on their home planet. He had reasons not to move as him and his father were in hiding. During the attack him and Kady are separated and put on different ships, and since both evacuating ships are full of civilians and not enough military personelle, Ezra is quickly conscripted and put in the cockpit of a cyclone fighter. On his first mission out, theta re asked to destroy the escape pods of one of their own fleet, and to destroy the ship itself. Ezra isn’t smart or stupid enough to do his own doggie for answers. That is until he gets in contact with Kady again.
The two of them team up in an unbelievable and captivating journey to discover the truth. Although it may be a hell of an information over load in the beginning, you quickly dive into Kady and Ezra’s world and lives discovering who you can and cannot trust.
This book is truly one hell of a ride and despite a shaky start I can. Or wait to dive into the second. Push through the beginning you’ll love every page and will be clawing for more. It’s a thrilling, heartbreaking, sci-fi adventure that will leave you at the edge of your seat. With an ending you never saw coming… well maybe you did… BUT there are a few twist and turns that will leave you screaming.
I give this book a 4 out of 5 starts. Illuminae is an amazing and astounding inter galactic adventure you won’t want to miss out on.
