This book hits close to home. In 2019 I unexpectedly lost my Mother. Since then I have battled grief on many different levels. It has taken me a long time to even think about reading a book like this that is strictly about grief and working through it. And even as I pressed “request” and got the email that I had been approved to review it, I was nervous.
I was nervous that once I began I wouldn’t be able to finish. Or, what i’ve found most, that the grief wasn’t realistic and I had to quit reading based on that. That was not the case here. You’ve Reached Sam dives into grief so beautifully and understandably.
Our main character Julie looses her boyfriend Sam in a tragic accident unexpectedly in their senior year. It throws her work, her plans, and her life for a loop. She has to battle through her grief in her own way, which others around her don’t understand as she pulls back and tries to act like it doesn’t bother her. But then, with a change of heart, after she throws away anything that reminds her of Sam, she panics and feels lost and calls his number, knowing he isn’t going to be on the other end. But, to her surprise, he picks up.
Through her calls with Sam, and getting to know his best friend and cousin even more, she works through her grief (and helps her friends work through theirs) to hopefully reach a point to where she can finally say good-bye and let him go.
This book truly floored me. I laughed, I cried, I got angry. I to this day think back on the last things I said and my last encounter with my Mom before she passed, and I would give anything for one more call, to hear her voice one more time. So to read someone getting that second chance, to say good-bye, shattered and filled my heart at the same time.
The ending truly struck me, and I sat there with tears streaming down my face.
The book doesn’t come out till November but I will be pre-ordering this right away and I can’t wait to read the finished copy all over again.
