The descriptions and sex scenes were great. But I also have complaints. There’s an R scene right at the beginning of the book that serves no real purpose besides being horrifying. It was completely unnecessary, we were already horrified by the women’s’ situation. There’s a repeated emphasis on the fact that the alien tribe only has “four mated women” and how desperate they are to find more women to “mate with.” The human women all seem largely fine with it for some reason, and there’s maybe ONE moment where the protagonist says “hey it should be their choice,” which the chief echoes to the others and it’s implied will be followed. But this doesn’t balance out the repeated mention of how these huge men are desperate to have offspring. It’s kind of terrifying.

Also, the women have known each other for maybe ten days on the ship, and talk like besties. Which yeah, sometimes people bond quickly, especially in trauma. But some of it feels… weird. She introduces her alien mate, and the girls immediately start making fun of her and cheering. While they’re also… freezing and lowkey dying. Another fact that the protagonist seems to bring up a lot, but sometimes seems like it’s on the back of her mind.

Also, the women are EXTREMELY quick to accept their fate as breeding partners and a freaky alien parasite. None of them express much of a desire to go home. None of them are just not interested in sex or in giving birth, or concerned about an alien worm entering their bodies. (Which they conveniently need to survive, forcing them into a mating bond.) It felt like they agreed way too easily. Like they aren’t really characters, just a chorus echoing the protagonist.

On the plus side, the male alien goes down on the protag immediately, which we love to see.

I thought this one was great. Loved Catalina, loved Thane, would’ve liked to see his grief explored more like how much we explored Catalina’s struggles. We love bisexual protagonists, non-binary characters, and tentacles~

The cover makes this look super horny, but in reality it’s a very sweet coming-out story with an autistic-coded love interest who just adores aquariums, and a protagonist who adores him. I really enjoyed it.

I really enjoyed the characters, and the safety systems they put in place for their BDSM. They do rely a lot on characters just using “FUCK.” To express themselves, which got a bit repetitive. There’s also a lot of almost over-explaining of things, and not allowing for nuance. Which is probably good in the sex scenes, but a bit grating in dialogue.
