Victorian Psycho by Virginia Feito

I loved the writing style. The author uses words I would never think to incorporate and they help elicit the creepy atmosphere of this book so well. The narrator, our MC, has a fun dark and sarcastic tone through the book that is both jarring and humorous. I loved the twists, the characters, and the intensity throughout. Also, loved the ending!! I greatly enjoyed this gory and dark read.

Wild West Village: Not a Memoir by Lola Kirke
3.0
I had no idea who Lola Kirke was until I read this. I found her to be funny, witty, and honest. The chapters about her family were the ones I found most interesting and I wish there were more of them. I felt like this book stayed relatively surface level. I would have liked to see her go more in-depth on pretty much everything mentioned in here. It was definitely an entertaining and fun read.

An Academy for Liars by Alexis Henderson

3.5 - mixed thoughts on this. It started off SUPER strong. I loved the plot & the whole concept. I was never fully sure where things were going. I felt like the MC was a bit flat & like I didn’t really know her. I had a lot of random questions that never get answered - loose ends unrelated to the main plot but still annoying to have left open. Overall, I enjoyed this but wish the momentum of the beginning carried through the whole time.
The Winner by Teddy Wayne

3.5 - I enjoyed this, despite the abundance of unlikeable characters. Class divide and conflict is an obvious theme here, but I also enjoyed the swap of gender roles that added to the power dynamics as well. I did not like Conor or Emily; he was a constant gaslighter and manipulator and she was overly needy and codependent. But, I understood some of Conor's feelings - Teddy Wayne does an excellent job of crafting characters who are just a bit too extreme to be relatable 100% of the time, but still make a lot of sense and have good reasoning. The cover makes this appear to be a thriller but I found it more lit fic with a touch of mystery. Overall I thought this was different but well done.

this book was no plot, no vibes. it was slow, & honestly boring. there was little to no interaction between the astronauts, & most of the book was description of earth which became repetitive. booker prize winners are hit or miss for me, & this one was a miss.
