Her Fearful Symmetry by Audrey Niffenegger

I should preface this review by stating that I don't consider myself to be a person who is "into" ghost stories. I, in fact, generally stay away from things that could be called fantasy or science fiction. BUT I absolutely adored the movie version of The Time Traveler's Wife, so when I saw that this was by the same author, I thought I'd give it a go...and I could hardly put it down!

Her Fearful Symmetry's plot firmly grabbed my attention from the beginning. There are few things I love more than some good family drama, so an aunt who had never met her twin sister's daughters leaving them an apartment across the Atlantic on the condition that they a) live there for a year and b) never let their parents set foot in it was right up my alley. The ghostly bits were introduced slowly and Niffenegger never quite lets her readers in on whether the ghost is present with or without malice. The ghost(s) add(s) drama without violence or any level of boogeyman-like haunting--the character(s) mostly play(s) out not unlike the agoraphobic neighbor.

This was a story about secrets and failed experiments, with more than a bit of the paranormal threaded tightly between, casting an element of the unknown and unknowable into most interactions. I think that anyone who has ever gone to great lengths searching for a way out of a trapping situation will see themselves reflected in this work.
