5.0

This was an easy 5 star read for me. I loved that Harari wasn’t woke when talking about gender dichotomy and hierarchy. And the idea that our ability to hate gave us the edge over other great apes was very interesting too. In the end of the book he talked a lot about our treatment of animals and it made me think that perhaps it’s just another example of the dynamism of our personal brand of hate: to care so little about an inferior as not to give credence to their sentience. I visited my friends’ dairy farm the other day and seeing the exploitation of those poor cows and their calfs made me almost physically uncomfortable. I won’t start drinking almond milk (because that stuff is nasty) but I will definitely appreciate my dairy more now that I saw how much suffering goes into making my favorite dairy products.
