This book is a compendium to this world. So before you go into it thinking it’s something it’s not PLEASE read the description.

In my opinion this book is perfect for what it is.
It has all the world and character information contained bound together for easy access.
Anything you need to know, or need a summary of, look it up in this book.
I also think this is the perfect placement for where it’s published. You have a lot going on in both the blood and ash series and flesh and fire series and so many things come together as you’re reading them in publication order. This book gives you a refresh and reset before what we all know is coming and that’s the two series finally converging for everything to make sense.

I loved the way all the world and character info dump was broken up with exclusive scenes about our favorite characters as well as new scenes with miss Willa.
It was interesting to finally see the things making poppy so flustered while reading the diary.

All and all if you’re a fan I recommend. It’s perfect to give you all the info you need in one place.

This was not my favorite of the books in this series but that doesn’t mean it wasn’t amazing! It was a book that suffered the dreaded “middle book” syndrome where so many things had to happen and be cramped in to make sure the timeline and plot continued the way it needed to. So other than that minor pacing issue that honestly wasn’t bad at all it just wasn’t as well paced as the previous ones that were exceptional in my opinion. I had no other complaints. I continue to love and appreciate the way JLA writes trauma. Her portrayals of stuff raging from anxiety, depression, grief and loss, are always spot on in a way that lets us understand the characters without using the trauma as only a plot device. That can be quite triggering for me and I never have had that problem reading JLA books.
So another win for me. I loved where the story went and can’t wait for the finale. ❤️

3.5 Stars.
It’s like a dark fantasy version of the movie “Shes the man” and it was great.
I always have fun reading these books. They are just a funny good time. ❤️

RATING: 5/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Pacing: I Personally would not classify this as a fast paced book. I thought it was about medium. It didn’t drag to me but it was still slow enough to establish characters and word building.

Plot: as typical with a brand new fantasy the plot is mostly there yet somehow unknown. You know the characters are moving through the plot with a purpose but you aren’t completely sure of what that is. I still thought the mysterious aspect of “not fully knowing” what was going on behind the scenes was done well w enough that I wasn’t annoyed while getting to know the world and the characters around me so no complaints here. :)

Character Development: Mild. If that’s your thing then this isn’t gonna be the book you go nuts for. We got to know a lot of people, places, and things so whip the main characters development it wasn’t much, and it was done slowly.
World Building:

Critiques: if I think of any I’ll edit them in. So far none tho.

Applause:
  • The Friendship between Liz and Grady. So well done.
  • Our main man is somehow like all of JLAs love interests combined. I see him being a fan favorite in the future.

Final Thoughts:
I genuinely had such a fun time reading this book. I think it’s a start to a New Romantasy that could Rival From Blood and Ash. It’s got everything I normally want in my Romance Fantasies. It’s got tension, mystery, spice, all sorts of magic that has yet to be discovered. If you like SJM and any other of JLAs books I think you’ll love this!
