3.5 rounded down. The Witches of El Paso had many elements of a wonderful novel, but was overall forgettable. It quickly grabbed my attention, but I began to lose interest as the story moved along. The ending felt rushed and I think the author could have benefited from focusing on one perspective instead of two.
Water Moon reminds me of the works of Hayao Miyazaki, but for grown ups. It is whimsical while remaining mature, cozy but high stakes, and full to the brim with the most imaginative world building I've read in a very long time. Not a single sentence of this novel is wasted, and by the end each scene comes together like an intricate puzzle. Plus Yambao's writing is absolutely stunning. This is an amazingly creative novel that I cannot recommend enough!
Hated this. Starts off with narrator talking about hating men, but by the halfway point she is sexually assaulting women with her hockey player boyfriend. Bizarre.
It seems like the author did not know what they wanted this book to be. At some points, it is a TikTok hockey player romance full of truly cringe-worthy smut. At others, it's a strange Disney adult fantasy where the main character repeatedly talks about how edgy Elsa from Frozen is. And very rarely, it is extreme horror.
If you are intimidated by the cover and comparisons to American Psycho, don't be. In my opinion, the horror is not that extreme until the very ending. If you are looking for extreme horror, I would pass on this one. Victorian Psycho by Virginia Feito handles female rage and extreme horror a million times better, try that instead!
