This book was suffocating in the best way. It is absolutely heart-poundingly thrilling and the prose is stunning in it grotesqueness. I didn't think I'd like a gothic novel written in the modern day but it has a timeless quality about it. It explores race, generational trauma, and eugenics in a way many other gothic novels don't. I definitely recommend reading it, especially in the fall.

This book made me cry in the library. It's a heartwarming but heartbreaking story about clinging to childhood while (nearly) everyone around you is growing up. It explores aging in a non-moralistic view and makes me yearn for a childhood where I felt free to be a child.

Beautiful art and the stories were kind of terrifying even though it's for a younger audience. I enjoyed it a lot

Elatsoe is amazing at showing the difference between justice and revenge while still being fun and magical.

This was a really captivating read that explores race, fetishization, interpersonal relationships, and the anxiety of becoming an adult. I related a lot to Emira in feeling left behind and not as mature or holistically as much of a person as you're told you should be. I loved seeing my own reactions to Alix as a character and introspecting the biases I held that made me root for her versus immediately despising Robbie (aka how white women are held less culpable than white men). It was a great novel.

Danez Smith is very good with their words; they utilize so many different structures in such amazing ways. This was an amazing collection. Some of my favorite lines: "i i did not come to preach of peace for that’s not the hunted’s duty.", "i know it’s foolish to compare. what advice do the drowned have for the burned? what gossip is there between the hanged & the buried?", and "a prison is a plantation made of stone & steel".

This collection is vulgar and raw. It doesn't have the same lyricism as Halsey's songs, but some of the poems are really good. Others, however, read a bit more like something she scratched into her diary. I think it needed a bit more editing
