So interesting to see the draft stages, but unfortunately the book is structured in a way that makes it horrifically dry. Frodo originally being called Bingo is a harrowing revelation.

Class makes animals of us all

You can tell it inspired a lot of good scifi, but that doesn't make it automatically better

I love a book that's mostly shenanigans - and yet also a searing critique of the British left! I love what Croucher does with 'historical-ish' fiction - the use of a fantasy medieval setting is often terrible in other hands, but they deal so deftly with ideas about legacy and who gets to tell history, so this book (and their others) feel so connected to the past whilst also having huge fun with it.

The central romance felt a little underbaked at points, but I am very enamoured by the characters and the love and hope they have for each other.

Will be thinking about this book and what it has to say for a good while!

Man's love for son eventually overcomes his contempt for autistic people.

More seriously, I did think this was well written and the characters had impressive depth, but I also found this boring, frustrating, and insensitive at times.

Absolutely devoured this - I love women and I love football. So good the americanisms didn't bother me!
