It's very rare that a romance book can mean so much more to me than words.
Thank you, Atria books for an arc to review.
Read, I read Unsteady. I admit I hesitated reading these books at all. I thought these would be like any sports romance. A fun silly time, goofy sport boys and their silly messy love lives.
But this series is so much more.
We follow these very real, very flawed leads. Peyton does not hesitate, does not try to force every character to interact or get along at first. She will leave things out of the story, make this ultrarealistic illusion of people actually recounting the same stories.
Points in Matty's pov that held so much to him were brief mentions in Rhys'. Scenes you knew would rock another character's world to know are left unspoken.
The center of Unloved is ultimately nothing like a sequel book that reminds you that these are merely side characters to a more prominent first book.
They are their own people who do not revolve their lives around their friend group and yet still perfectly show the pivotal necessity their found family and relationships are.
These feel like real people who make real mistakes, and you can honestly see and understand why they're sometimes even antagonists.
That being said their lovable. Not morally corrupt at all, and an author who can still write these swoony lovesick romance protagonists perfect for romcoms and still breathe humanity into them is an instant favorite to me.
As well...this is the hardest part for me to admit...
This story leaves me bare...so bare I am scared of others reading it and seeing these horrible, desperate sides to myself.
Having RSD, a childhood plagued by feeling unloved, undeserving, and a constant failure fuelled further by suffocating and abusive relationships that split me raw and small for the convience of someone not worthy.
Matty and Ro are too sides of myself. I was so deeply ashamed of. Especially falling out of a relationship I thought was my happily ever after.
I do not feel that way now... I feel slightly stronger... slightly more seen.
This story is something I am going to hold on for the rest of my life, and I am grateful, so INCREDIBLY grateful I got an arc and that I didn't just ignore this series...that I didn't write it off.
THIS is why romance means the world to me THIS is why I was once a silly little girl watching romcoms with her single mother after long days and found herself LONGING to be kissed in the middle of a thunderstorm.
I will probably never read a book that tackles my specific struggles with ADHD, romance, and my own self image so intensely again.
