What a gem of a book. Clever, compassionate, a page-turning story and written with such a surprising and lovely originality of phrase and description. So many things to like here, the richness of detail, and depth of development, of the magical world, the relationship of the sisters (and the timid sister finding her own strengths), the many unexpected twists and the power of simple things - a pencil, a strand of hair. Such an imagination and such a way with words. Will be looking out for more from Kamilla Benko.

A joy to read this to my ‘auburn’-headed daughter and see the love of Anne pass to another generation. Struck by the language, exquisite descriptions of landscape and the modernity of this 1908-written story - “Why shouldn’t women be ministers?” Anne said. - things I don’t recall noticing as a child reader. Definitely stands the rest of time:-)
