Thank you NetGalley for an E-ARC of this book!
I have a lot of mixed feelings about this book. I think a lot of important topics were being talked about and represented but they all in a way fell flat. Our main character is experiencing the death of their father, years of religious trauma, and internal turmoil of not knowing how to say that they feel more comfortable as a woman than they ever did as a man. The emotion was there and the writing was very beautiful but it all fell flat and I really was expecting more. Also,I did not care much for the male love interest Everett. I thought he was just not a developed character and he was just kinda there to give our main character a love interest.

“Better by far you should forget and smile Than that you should remember and be sad.”
This book was a journey of grief and it was displayed amazingly. When you lose someone you end up losing a part of yourself and it’s a change that no one can be prepared for. This was such an emotional book that I picked up on a whim and I didn’t know that would end up really appreciate reading.

Nothing could have prepared me for the pain and emptiness this book has left me in. I have a lot of thoughts on this book and they all come down to how misunderstood Sula was. You can’t overlook the suffering she did cause but she just wanted to be free. I think both Nel and Sula were the only people in the end who each of them belonged to. The idea of girlhood and friendship and the everlasting bond that comes when you have that deep of a connection like Nel and Sula did was complex. In the end both of the girls lasts thoughts were of each other. The love that seeped through the pages was unreal. You cannot convince me that Nel and Sula did not love each other, I think they just found their love when it was too late.
