Knowing Eliza Clark’s work, I went into this anticipating the beauty, the dark humor, and the eeriness. It is a collection comprised of eleven stories, each dealing with different contemporary issues. While I didn’t love them all equally, there were three which really stood out to me, “The Problem Solver,” “Goth GF,” and “Company Man.”

I’ll only say a few words about the three I adored, they are quite short so I don’t want to spoil them. Please check all trigger warnings before considering reading.

“The Problem Solver” follows a young woman who confides in her male roommate/friend after being SA’d, and how he deals with her trauma.

“Goth GF” follows a young server who obsesses over the sexuality of his older co-worker.

“Company Man” my favorite of the three, I’ll just share a quote: “I never sleep but I’m always a little tired. I’m never bored, but I’m never having fun, either. I’m never hungry, but I’m never full. I know I’m waiting for something, but I don’t know what.”

I need to come back to write this review in a few days. I’m emotional and speechless.

I usually love a stream of conscious narrative. I just didn’t feel connected to this one.

This was such a unique and beautiful story. The ending makes sense and I can’t be mad but it crushed me.

3.5 I really enjoyed this, the writing was great and such a unique story, I just didn’t feel emotionally connected to it.

“It’s not so easy writing about nothing” It was simple and lovely. Beautiful prose about the little things, about coffee, about specific moments. I didn’t love Just Kids by her but I loved this.

This book was not at all what I was expecting, it was so much more. 4.25.
