Goblin Market by Christina Rossetti

Rossetti’s poem is one that will lead you through temptation yourself. I came across in my first year of undergrad and was thoroughly and utterly captivated by her imagery, narrative, simile and metaphors. So much so that I’ve written three essays on it in my undergrad.
The Romance of a Shop by Amy Levy

Amy Levy’s ‘The Romance of a Shop’ is one that in all honesty may have been hard to get into but by the end I absolutely adored the novel! For those who are into the Victorian concept of the New Women, I highly recommend this text! It is full of romance (obviously) but Levy’s writing left me finding bits and pieces of myself. I kept putting sticky tabs in pages where quotes grabbed at my chest. Truly a piece of work. Plus the Broadviewpress edition gives multiple essays and poetry which if you’ve read her poetry you will love the essays and more!
Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher

I read this back in grade 11 for the first time and I reread it three times after. I actually remember having to put it down at times because although I was invested I was caught up emotionally in the book. Which essentially this book left me in tears. Jay Asher writes on the importance of what bullying can do to a person, that actions have consequences which can can be dire. I think this book is important for all teenagers and YA to read in their life. It hits on a heavy but important subject matter.

Gaskell’s ‘Ruth’ was my first experience in the realm of the topic of the Fallen Woman, (besides Hardy’s ‘Tess’). It took me about 3-4 weeks to read as I found it kind of slow but nevertheless, it was a fascinating novel. I ended up tearing up towards the end (no spoilers though).
