i can’t really figure out the best ways to explain my thoughts or what stopped this from getting a higher rating - so here’s a loved and didn’t love list:
loved:
- asexual rep! i saved multiple quotes from this book because they were so good at explaining the thoughts and feelings of a-spec people to non a-spec people. I especially loved that we got to see two asexual people who experience their asexuality slightly differently, so we get to hear about both of their journeys.
- i enjoyed the idea of a little cabin getaway for the setting of this book
- i like Joy (our FMC) and found her to be an enjoyable character
- the end of the book raised this rating an extra .25 stars because i thought it was cute
didn’t love:
- i truly didn’t feel like i knew the male love interest at all? his character felt kind of… unfinished? i’m not sure how to explain it
- i very much did not love malcolm… and i’m not entirely certain why other than the miscommunication (i started to dislike him more towards the second half of the book more so than the beginning)
overall, glad i read it, would recommend for ace and bipoc rep, i had a good time! but also not the best book i’ve ever read. i went in with unreasonably high hopes though, so that may have affected my experience as well!

the last 20% of this book alone brought my rating down - up until the third act conflict i was a big fan. the end fell off for me for sure
