Annihilation by Jeff VanderMeer

I was overall enthralled by the entire concept of this book. The author hooked me at the beginning and kept me clinging to every word… until we met The Crawler. Disappointed to say, I felt that interaction underwhelming and unsatisfactory with all that led up to that moment.

We still don’t have any clue what’s happening, why it’s happening, how it started despite being lead to believe we were about to uncover, at least a portion, some secrets. I have quite a bit to gripe about after finishing Annihilation, but can’t get it out of my head.

I felt everything our narrator was experiencing. Whenever she had the sense something was looking at her from behind, so did I. Whoever she felt something was right around the corner, so did I. I don’t know how Jeff Vandermeer transported me to Area X but I felt like I was there.

(Side note: I started reading this book because I liked the 2018 movie, but they are worlds apart. I’m grateful whoever for the movie. I would have never picked up this book without it.)

The narrator’s recount of her life, although mundane, were undeniably fascinating. How can those two feelings be simultaneously true? I think it’s a testament to Area X, Annihilation, Jeff Vandermeer. Looking back I’m thinking to myself… not much really happened in this book. I still felt lost in the story, part of the journey, and totally, for lack of a better word, entertained.

The disappointing aspects of the book can’t hold a flame to the entirety of the story. In the same way the biologist was utterly fascinated by Area X and needed to absorb herself further into the land, so am I completely invested in The Southern Reach trilogy. I can truly say I’m not sure where this story is going, but I can’t wait to find out.
