I enjoy an unreliable narrator. Although, in this case, it feels drawn out with not much happening for most of the book. It helps that it’s a quick read and the ending has more action. I was satisfied that the villains ended up victims of their own doing.

The author lays out a vulnerable cautionary tale through telling her story. People are quick to judge when it comes to cults, and she shows how one can be manipulated and broken down to not trust their own instincts, even when things don’t seem quite right. As a follower of Christ, I am deeply disturbed by people twisting that faith relationship to abuse the vulnerable and gain power. Despite that exploitation, Joy’s story serves as an inspiration for finding identity and truth.

Highly recommend listening to her audiobook
