The Reader by Bernhard Schlink

This is a book I wish I hadn't purchased. Not because I hated it but precisely because it moved me in neither direction.

All too often this is exactly how I feel about most works of "great literary value". Far too many books are considered great because they followed form and style than because they aspired to be nothing more than a great story. Pretentiousness is not only old hat it's also some of the dullest most contrived crud I've ever read. This book actually doesn't even inspire that much feeling.

The Reader had one or two interesting scenes toward the beginning of the book and then the book fell utterly flat. The scandal of the book is mild enough that I shrugged it off completely. I thoroughly believe that I finished it to prove that i could.
