The Mermaid by Christina Henry is a delightful mix of historical fiction and fantasy! We are introduced to this curious mermaid who falls in love with a sailor. She lives with him by the sea and is free to return to the ocean anytime she wishes. She chooses the name Amelia and makes a wonderful life with her sailor named Jack. He grows older every day but she does not seem to age since mermaids age differently than humans. One day, Jack goes fishing and does not return. She then holds a bitterness towards the ocean and how it took away her love. Eventually, a man named Levi comes and makes an offer to join the American Museum run by none other, PT Barnum. She sees this as a chance to be among the humans and learn about them. However, she discovers that she is viewed as an animal and how quickly her freedom is stripped away.

Be still my heart. I just closed this book 10 minutes ago.

The Man on the Roof by Michael Stephenson is a murder mystery! The novel begins in Shady Lake, Ohio. It is a family neighborhood, where the kids play together and group outings occur. However, there is Herbert McKinney, the “Old Man” of the neighborhood. He is kind of an outsider. The neighbors think of him as crazy and senile. Especially when he starts mentioning he saw someone on the neighbor’s roof. One morning after a neighborhood outing, the group comes outside and sees a neighborhood teenage punk dead for all to see. As the police begin to investigate the murder, their lives are turned upside down. Who murdered the boy? Everyone begins to turn on each other and secrets begin to open up. Suddenly, the Old Man doesn’t seem so crazy. The only question is will the murderer kill again?

I have had this book on my TBR list for years. And I really do mean years. I bought this book when I was in high school! And to give you a timeline: I graduated in 2006. In college, I studied history, specifically European History. How I never read this book is beyond me! I am so glad I finally read it! This book is no easy feat either. This book is 973 pages of intense storylines, character development, and history.

“When we lose someone we love, we can either die with them or live on to celebrate their life. I’m tired of focusing on what we lost. I want to focus on what we had.”-Before and Again

I wasn’t sure what to expect when I received Before and Again by Barbara Delinsky. I honestly didn’t read the synopsis. I loved the color and the title. It is bright and warm. However, this is not the case at the start of the book. Mackenzie Cooper was driving her daughter to a playdate, looked down while driving, and crashed. The crash killed her five-year-old daughter, Lily. It became a high profile case. She was tortured by the press, lost her family and her marriage in the process. She then changed her name to Maggie Reid and became a makeup artist in a new town. She made a few friends but kept a low profile. Everything she worked for seems to go up in smoke when her friend’s son gets arrested for hacking. The press is everywhere and to make matters worse, the new owner of her place of employment is her ex-husband. How is she supposed to move on with her life when the past keeps coming back to haunt her?

I am blown away. I just closed the book less than an hour ago and I doubt I will be able to sleep just thinking about this book.

I have seen the Jurassic Park movies more times than I can count. The first one was one of my favorites as a child. Then being a mother to 2 boys, dinosaurs are life. I never even knew about the book until I was in college. Well in my book club, our June selection was Jurassic Park by Michael Crichton. It seemed like the perfect time to read the book since Jurassic World 2 came out this month. I think everyone knows the premise of Jurassic Park whether they read the book or not.

Paleontologist, Dr. Grant, and Dr. Sattler, along with mathematician Ian Malcolm head to an island where scientists have figured out how to clone dinosaurs. The question isn’t how they did this but is this something that they can control? While on the tour, malfunctions occur making the tour into an epic adventure back to the world of dinosaurs.
