So I read Fractured by Karin Slaughter in a day. You know those times when you get some popcorn and watch a scary movie alone at night and you are just stuffing the popcorn in your face, not blinking at the TV screen. Yeah, that is how I am when I read any Karin Slaughter book. This time, instead of popcorn it is a red velvet bundt cake.
This is the second book in the Will Trent Series. In true Karin Slaughter fashion, it starts off with the brutal murder of a teen girl. Will Trent and his boss Amanda are brought in to assist the police department. However, after a thorough examination of the crime scene. One girl is dead, but another girl named Emma may have been kidnapped. Will Trent usually works alone, but he is assigned a partner in this case. Faith Mitchell’s mother was involved in an investigation ran by Will Trent. So emotions are tense between the two, but there is no doubt they make a good team. Can they find the murderer and save Emma in time?
One thing I always appreciate with Karin Slaughter books is that I am never disappointed. I never find her books predictable either. This book especially! I found myself shocked more than once. This book has excellent twists, turns, and diversions. The suspense kept me up until 1 am until I finished the book. There is not one moment where I thought the book is dull or slow. I was fully engaged from the beginning. So much so, it took every bit of control I possess to not get up, go to the library, and get book 3 called Undone. But my TBR is calling my name.
Anyway, as always, I love Will Trent. I think Faith Mitchell is going to be a great partner for him. He is dyslexic and struggles with being open about it. However, his observation in crime scenes is off the charts. He is such a brilliant character.
One thing about these books, if you are not into violence, this may not be the book for you. Karin Slaughter is very descriptive about the crime scenes. I actually appreciate that aspect, because it makes me feel like I am there and a part of the investigation. Anyway, 5 out of 5 stars from me!

The Time of Contempt by Andrzej Sapkowski is the second book in The Witcher Series. Rumor has it that the show will only consist of The Last Wish, Sword of Destiny, and Blood of Elves. So now I am ahead of the game!
For those just tuning in…Geralt is a witcher. He is made to take down the most ferocious of monsters. Now his destiny lies with Ciri, a young girl whose future will determine the fate of the world. He must protect her at all costs. However, war has been declared everywhere. There are those who seek Ciri for their own gains and Geralt can’t trust anyone. Ciri is a young woman now and determined to forge her own path. Yennefer, an enchantress assists Geralt with keeping Ciri out of sight. However, the Wizard’s Guild deals with a coup. Geralt and Ciri are separated and both in danger.
I really need maps. Maps and graphs. The world-building is so incredible that I feel like I need some sort of guide while I am reading. Sorcerers are under the control of kings, who are always declaring war on one another. So I think before I start the next book, I am going to do a little studying so I can have a better idea of all the politics.
Onto the characters. I still don’t like Yennefer. Am I missing something about her? She doesn’t deserve Geralt. Geralt is amazing. I do wish there were some more monster battles in this book. We did not get to see his full fighting greatness in this book. It is more about the coup and politics. I also miss him and Ciri traveling together. Together, they make such a great team and I have really enjoyed seeing Ciri learn from him. However, Ciri does need to discover herself. I did enjoy her storyline. She is going to be a badass just like Geralt—actually even more than Geralt.
This book is a little slower than the rest of the series has been, but I have a feeling that it is mostly buildup for the next book, Baptism of Fire. I can’t wait to pick up the next book. I am hoping the Netflix Series really does the books justice! I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars!

Get ready, this review will be a doozie. After We Fell by Anna Todd is the third book in the After Series. The book picks back up with Tessa and Hardin who is on again and off again. SHOCKER!
Oh, I should warn you…Spoilers AHEAD!
At the end of book 2, they run into Tessa’s father, who she hasn’t seen since she was a child. He is homeless and an alcoholic. This obviously puts more strain on an already strained relationship. There are more things that happen throughout this book, but I can tell you, once again, it is THE SAME issues from the first two books. They fight, they have makeup sex, they fight again, break up for a few days, Hardin gives the most insincere apology, Tessa takes him back, and this cycle just repeats.
This book is over 800 pages. For those of you in the back that did not hear me, IT IS 800 PAGES!!! The first book was over 500, the second book was over 700, and then this book. THERE IS NO REASON FOR THESE BOOKS TO BE THIS LONG!!! But it is like watching a train derail. You know it is going to be awful, and you should look away, but you have to know how it ends! I don’t mind raunchy drama. It is an unbelievable drama that just entertains me for the afternoon. But sweet baby Jesus, why are the books so long? Then the author goes and writes another cliffhanger, and the next book is also 500 pages. But will I read it? Of course, I will.
However, there needs to be a statement at the beginning of the book for readers, especially teens. This is not a healthy relationship!! It is NOT romantic. It is abusive and toxic. If your boyfriend has similarities to Hardin…RUN. Then there is Tessa. This stupid, stupid, stupid, girl. The author writes her like she is some smart, accomplished person. NO. Just no. The fact that she has made it this far in life, is surprising. Goodness gracious, this girl gives me a headache. I also picked up this book after reading the Witcher, so going from epic women, that do make mistakes but are discovering themselves and kicking ass along the way to ...Tessa. Well, it may explain my anger.
Normally, when I end a book, especially one that doesn’t really leave an impression on me. I put it aside, write the review and just forget about it. (Or in really bad cases, rant to my husband and try to forget when I go to sleep at night. ) However, something caught my eye in the acknowledgments in this book. The author was discussing how Tessa and Hardin “make mistakes, but love fiercely.” Then #Hessa. I am so sorry. The author has NO clue what love is. Because the last 2,000 pages I have read do NOT depict love.
Ok, so my husband is already and bed, so I ranted to you instead. I am going to sleep myself now. I rate this book 2 out of 5 stars

I love all things Disney and have been meaning to read all the Twisted Tale books. I did read the Beauty and the Beast twisted tale a couple of years ago and loved it. I could not pass up to read this Frozen Twisted Tale called Conceal, Don’t Feel by Jen Calonita. Everything in this book is the same as the Disney movie, except for one thing. Elsa and Anna have never known each other. Elsa has been raised as an only child, preparing to be Queen of Arendelle, but it has always felt like something is missing. Anna was adopted when she was a baby by a couple who own a bakery, but she yearns to visit Arendelle. One tragic day, Elsa’s parents die and Elsa’s powers become out of control. However, she not only discovers her powers, but memories are starting to come back. These memories lead her to discover a curse that changed her and her family’s life forever.
If you are a lover of all things Disney, then you will enjoy this book. I read this book in a matter of hours. It is pretty much a copy of the movie only with a few differences. However, there are lines that are straight from the movie, actually… not just lines, full scenes. Now, I love the movie, so it didn’t really bother me. I just figured it would have more than just the slight differences.
As the oldest of 3 sisters, Frozen will always have a special place in my heart. I do love how the bond of sisters really comes through in the book, just like in the movie. Even their memories being destroyed can’t keep them apart. So if you have a chilly afternoon and a few hours to kill, this will make the evening magical. I rate this book 4 out of 5 stars.

Baptism of Fire by Andrzej Sapkowski is the third book in the Witcher Series (or the 5th, if you count the intro and tales.) This book picks up with the aftermath of the fall of the Wizards Guild. Geralt is injured pretty severely and Ciri is still missing. However, kings are plotting. They say they have Ciri. However, she is still among the Rats and her power grows. Geralt will stop at nothing to find Ciri, even if that means tracking through Nilfgaard. War is all around and trust is rare. Geralt can’t journey alone, he meets Milva and of course, Dandelion is always there. Danger is always looming, creatures are all around, but who are the real monsters?
This is another phenomenal installment in the series. While not much happens with the plot, the book is still utterly entertaining. Moody Geralt might be annoying to some but I really enjoyed it. He has always been so sure about being able to fight and protect those around him, but now his abilities are limited. So his frustration is understandable. Dandelion making fun of him made for some hilarious moments. However, my favorite part of this book is Milva. She is a fierce archer who is not afraid to call anyone out. She is an excellent addition to the group. So basically, the plot continues slowly, but the character development is on point.
The concept of who is truly a monster comes up again in this book. We meet Regis, a barber-surgeon, who also happens to be a vampire. Those around him must decide if he is trustworthy. Is he evil, just because he is a vampire? Geralt has to even confront his prejudices.
Another fantastic addition to this series and totally worth 5 out of 5 stars. Ok, now that you are done reading this, you can go back to watching the Witcher. Let me know what you think!

Land of Last Chances by Joan Cohen is an interesting story about a woman named Jeanne Bridgeton. She is in her late 40s and is married to her job. She thought she was going through menopause but it turns out she is pregnant. She also doesn't know who the father is. When it comes to work, she is always sure of what to do, but not when it comes to her personal life. She debates on having the baby after she discovers she may have the Alzheimer's gene. She doesn't want to bring a baby into the world when she may not remember who she is in a few years. While navigating this aspect of her life, she is also trying to navigate issues at work. The CEO of her company is dealing with PTSD after serving in Afghanistan. This book goes through the intense journey that will lead her to make life-altering decisions.
There is so much happening in the story. It is almost hard to believe that all this can happen to one person. I really enjoyed the main storyline of Jeanne trying to figure out if she should risk having the baby. I felt that she is trying to think of what is best for the baby. For those who are pro-life, this may not be the book for you. Even though, I think there is something everyone can learn from reading about different experiences. I feel that the author really grasped Jeanne's anxiety and conflicting thoughts. I also appreciated that the author talks about issues like PTSD, and how it can affect someone and those they love around them. There is also a friend who struggles with diabetes. I have actually never read a story about someone who struggles with diabetes before and it is very eye-opening. It really captured the seriousness of the disease.
However, the only character I liked is the dog. Yes, there is a dog in this story. Yes, you should have tissues. While I appreciated the issues surrounding the characters, they were all selfish. They only thought of themselves. There wasn't one character who I felt was likable. They all overreact. Every conversation seems to end in an argument and it became quite tedious.
This book a women's fiction book and does discuss many important topics, but it is not a page-turner. If you are looking for something that is a little more fast-paced, then this book is not for you. The pacing is quite slow. So overall, I rate this book 3 out of 5 stars. I appreciate the issues discussed. It just seems like so much put into one story. But there is also so much emotion. Readers will definitely need tissues for this book!
Thank you JKS Communications for a copy of this book!

Sleeping Beauty is my favorite Disney princess movie. So obviously I had to read this book. Once Upon a Dream by Liz Braswell begins with the defeat of Maleficent. Prince Phillip goes to wake his princess with true loves first kiss. When their lips meet. Prince Phillip collapses and Aurora does not wake up. Little does Aurora know that she is trapped inside a dream world. Her parents are evil, Maleficent is Queen but treats Aurora like a niece. No one is allowed outside the castle and it is surrounded by thorns. Aurora starts having memories–memories that don’t make sense, and the only way to discover it is on The Outside. The only way to escape is to discover who she truly is and who she can trust.
So…because this is my favorite Disney princess, this book will be held to a higher standard. So I actually love the premise of the book. More than I liked the movie, Maleficent. (Angelina Jolie made a great Maleficent until the final 15 minutes when she turned into Maleficent tomb raider. Sorry, not sorry. ) I love the fact that Aurora has a voice in this book. In the Disney movie, we don’t actually get to know her that much after she gets cursed. So this book we get to see her courage and her frustrations with just being gifted with beauty and song.
So the things I did not like…the dialogue. The dialogue felt childish and immature. However, I felt like I was reading about two random characters. It did not feel like I was reading about Aurora and Prince Phillip. I understand this book is meant to put a twist on the story, but the characters felt entirely different, unrecognizable. Sigh.
I did read this book in just a few hours during an afternoon storm. It is a book that Disney lovers will enjoy. So I rate this book 3 out of 5 stars.

You all probably know by now that I have a weakness for audiobook thrillers. So it is no surprise that I picked And Then You Were Gone by R.J. Jacobs and read by Amy McFadden. The story introduces Emily Firestone, a child psychologist and who is also bipolar. One weekend, she and her boyfriend Paolo go sailing. When she wakes up after a deep sleep, Paolo is gone. There is no way he drowned, but then what happened to him. His assumed death is linked to his work as a scientist coming up with a vaccination for a deadly disease that had taken the life of Emily’s father when she was younger. However, due to her instability, she immediately becomes a suspect. She recruits the help of Paolo’s best friend, but more mysterious deaths begin to happen. Can they find answers before it is too late?
UGHHHHHHH! I had high hopes for this book. I saw that fans of Alice Feeney would enjoy this book. Welp. I did not enjoy it. Where to begin? First of all, I love when authors discuss mental illness to reduce the stigma. When they first mention that Emily is bipolar, I was thrilled. They discuss what she experiences and how everyone is different. That is absolutely wonderful. I started listening to the book thinking that this book will be phenomenal. As the book went on, I discovered that Emily’s bipolar disorder is the only thing that defines her. I feel that discussing mental illness is one thing, but those who suffer from any mental illness are not defined by it. It felt like she mentioned bipolar every single time she spoke. I struggle with OCD and anxiety. It wreaks havoc on my life daily. But it is not the only thing about me. Emily is not the only character that lacks dimension. It seems like all the characters in the story are very similar. Also, for how much Emily claims she isn’t an alcoholic, she sure drinks a lot. She seems like she is always drinking and even gets a DUI. But nope, alcohol is not a problem. (sarcasm)
I have not quite decided what the problem is with my next issue. I can’t tell if it is the dialogue, the narration, or perhaps both? The author was trying to give Emily wit and sarcasm and it just came off cheesy and cringeworthy. The narration did not help it. I can’t quite describe it but the way Emily’s voice was portrayed, came off annoying.
Lastly, the pace of this novel is unbelievably slow. And the twist? Predictable. So, unfortunately, I have to rate this book 2 out of 5 stars. I appreciate what the author was trying to do with shedding light on mental illness but it was not executed well.
Oh! Merry Christmas! Sorry, this is not a more positive and happy blog post! I hope you all have a wonderful time filled with happiness and joy beyond measure!

There are a few female heroes that I have who I think make the world a better place and I would love to have the impact that they have. One of those women is Mariska Hargitay and her work with sexual assault victims and her determination to end the backlog of rape kits. Well, now I am adding Michelle McNamara to that list. I’ll Be Gone in the Dark by Michelle McNamara is an incredible true crime novel about the Golden State Killer. Sadly, Michelle McNamara passed before she could complete her in-depth account of the Golden State Killer and witness his arrest. The Golden State Killer started out as a serial rapist that terrorized California. In the beginning, he only targeted single women, later he targeted couples. Then began to murder. He committed more than 50 sexual assaults and at least 10 murders. He evaded the police for a long time. However, Michelle poured over the evidence, got to know the victims and became utterly obsessed with bringing the Golden State Killer to justice.
If you are like me, then you watch crime documentaries and read true crime like it is an addiction. For me, I am usually terrified but I can never turn away. It is clear that Michelle McNamara became obsessed because she desperately wanted justice for the victims. The horror and torture this man exacted on so many people is just unreal. Michelle’s determination and empathy for the victims is absolutely inspiring. If only more of us cared the way she did…
Once I picked up this book, it was difficult to put down. The crimes are detailed chronologically. She does not leave one stone unturned. I felt as if I was examining the evidence right along with her. The end truly broke my heart with her untimely death. She is an inspiration. I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars. This is the best of true crime and some of the greatest investigative skills I have ever read.
“One day soon, you’ll hear a car pull up to your curb, an engine cut out. You’ll hear footsteps coming up from your front walk. Like they did for Edward Wayne Edwards, twenty-nine years after he killed Timothy Hack and Kelly Drew in Sullivan, Wisconsin. Like they did for Kenneth Lee Hicks, thirty years after he killed Lori Billingsley in Aloha, Oregon.
The doorbell rings… This is how it ends for you.”

Karin Slaughter has easily become one of my favorite authors. If I could just spend the next week binge reading all her books, I would be one happy reader. Undone by Karin Slaughter is the third book in the Will Trent Series. Will Trent is a brilliant special agent. In this installment, a young woman was hit by a car and taken to the hospital. Turns out she is a victim of severe torture. Dr. Sara Linton is in charge of this patient, but something isn’t sitting quite right. When another body comes in with similar injuries, she works with Special Agents Will Trent and his partner Faith Mitchell. Both are struggling with their own secrets, but this case takes precedence. They are up against the clock. This hasn’t been the killer’s first murder, and they need to solve the case before he takes another woman.
Karin Slaughter is just incredible. I am always glued to every book from the very first page. Every single Karin Slaughter book I have read always starts out with an intense crime or crime scene. There is no build-up to the suspense, it always starts right from the beginning. Not only does this book start with a brutal crime, but we also learn some big news about Faith Mitchell and it will affect her work as a special agent. I almost screamed out loud because I love her partnership with Will Trent. So I was literally biting my nails throughout this entire book. Stay strong, Faith, Will needs you!!!!
As always, the suspense is phenomenal. However, the characters are all just fantastic. Faith and Will make a great team, and I absolutely loved Dr. Sara Linton’s added expertise. I still hate Angie. (Will’s on-again, off-again girlfriend) She does not deserve Will. Then there is Will and Faith’s boss, Amanda Wagner. God, she is fierce and I love her. She is the type of character that you either love or hate. Her sassy-ness is everything.
“Your women’s intuition is not impressing me tonight, Will”
THAT SASS THOUGH!
But Will may not always appreciate it.
“…Will had to admit were remarkably good calves for a woman he often thought of as the Antichrist.”
I will never stop loving their banter. Even though these books are extremely dark, that little bit of humor definitely makes these books extremely well-rounded. Be prepared, these books are extremely dark and descriptive. They go into so much detail involving the crime which includes the murder or sexual assault. So these books are not for those who are sensitive to that kind of detail.
As always, this book deserves 5 out of 5 stars. I can’t wait to pick up the next book in the series!
