The Infinity Courts reminded me exactly why I love to read YA. I loved every bit of this book, and it had my undivided attention from the very start until the very end. The feeling of satisfaction after I finished reading this one was pure book bliss!

I feel like this book was one of the most anticipated of the year for so many people. Rightfully so. The topics are incredible. The complex look into colonialism and how that affects literally everyone involved was unmatched. The way that lost children look for a place of belonging, and not finding it anywhere. The way that it is written for us to really understand just how complex that relationship is was amazing. I found myself questioning with Touraine at every turn, and sympathizing with the confusing identity and loyalty. Absolutely fantastic.

Unfortunately, this book didn’t grip me in the way I was hoping. The worst part is that I couldn’t even tell you exactly why. I thought the relationship that Touraine had with Luca vs Cantic vs the Sands was absolutely wonderful. I thought the topics were so important and I was very interested in learning about them and hearing them be explored. But I just kept spacing out. I only have good things to say about this book, but I was still not drawn in as much as I could have been. I wouldn’t let that count you out at all, though! It is probably just me. Read more...

3.5 very human, sword fighting, heartfelt stars!

Big Takeaway:

The Sword in the Street is a lovely book that takes a nice spin on fantasy by really doing a great job in presenting very real and very believable interactions between a wonderful set of characters. It touches on relationship problems and victories in a way that I never see enough of. It was absolutely refreshing.

I received a copy of this book for free for participation in Caffeine Book Tours :) All opinions are my own.

Wow this book is clever I loved how Alyssa Cole managed to pull this off. Check out my full review here! :)

Eerie, tense, thoughtful, clever, informative, thrilling, compelling, and mysterious

When No One is Watching was recommended to me by Sarah (at Girl On Books, just like half of the books I read). I’m not usually a person who likes to read any kind of creepy things at all, because I will literally have nightmares for weeks. That is to say I’m a huge chicken. Though this book had some creepy moments, I was (thank goodness) able to survive it!

Brief Summary: When No One is Watching follows Sydney, a girl who was born and raised in a historically Black neighborhood in Brooklyn. As time goes on, and Sydney grows up, she notices that her neighborhood seems to change every time a for sale sign goes up on one of the houses. This clever tale spins gentrification into the new monster, and makes us stare society’s evils down head on.

This book was written so well I was astonished the entire time. I loved how the author managed to make gentrification into the truest evil here. Honestly, I love when books make something we know to be bad into the monster. It’s always so clever and it makes a huge statement. It didn’t slip past me that even though there was a villain in here, the entire time I was tense because of racism and gentrification. It really made you look at the terrible harm that racism and gentrification causes communities.

This book was so well done! It was quirky, unique and interesting; I really loved it. Check out my full review here!!

Spooky, atmospheric, clever, compelling, intriguing, mysterious, and fun

What Big Teeth was recommended to me by Sarah at Girl on Books (go read her review too!). She told me to read this book so many times before I finally gave in and got it. And even then, it sat on my bookshelf for a long time before I actually got to it. I’m so glad that I let it keep staring at me, because it was really good. It’s so atmospheric, and it feels like the house is alive, which is one of my favorite things! It was written so well and I loved it a lot!

Quick Summary: What Big Teeth follows Eleanor on her way back to her home after she had been sent away to school for years. Once she finally gets home, she hardly recognizes her family. Though they have always been monsters, she used to fit in with them, even though she knew she was something different. Now, after being away for so long, her family is no longer comforting like they once were, but terrifying. Eleanor must figure out how to live with and deal with her horrifying family now that she has been left as head of household.

My absolute favorite thing about this book was how unique the monsters were. I loved that the family were werewolves, but with added creativity. That Eleanor’s mother was some kind of partial sea creature, but we never really know what. That we are not sure what Eleanor is herself. Every monster was so interesting, and we never got a full understanding. We got just enough information on the monsters that we were left curious the whole time, but they still remained mysterious. The amount of detail we were given for the creatures was absolutely perfect to maintain the mysterious and spooky mood of the book. Continue Reading...

Look, I haven't even finished this yet. I have a little left, but there's no way I would rate it more than 1 star. So might as well give it now.

2004 did not age well here.

I literally can't tell you how much I cried reading this. Ren is the character I needed to understand me when I was a teenager and still need today. I am not alone

I'm a day late, but happy publication day to Courtney Gould! This book was really such a great read! Go check it out everyone

This book was so well researched and so well executed, but it took me a while to read because it hits a little close to home. It's very well done! Check out my full review here!!! :)
