Entertaining but not a lot of depth. I don’t love how this author dealt with race, it felt very hollow. Also I feel like I would’ve enjoyed it more if I got less of the references it was like oh ok we’re doing Ingrid Bergman now, then Monty Clift and Liz Taylor etc. and it kept taking me out of the story. The journalist character was boring as well. Evelyn herself was fairly compelling though and the book did make me tear up a bit a couple of times. Just not really a fan of the gossipy, very dialogue-heavy style but I guess it does the job for what it is.

Exploring white obsession with the blues through the form of a ghost story.. I can’t get over what a good idea that is. And it’s executed so well. This book was such a unique experience. I’ve been rereading passages and I think the way the story was crafted was very effective. The style of writing especially in the second half works really well in putting the reader in the character’s headspace.

I think my expectations were too high this didn’t really do much for me. The Mr Pirzada story was my favourite and I liked the final one too, the last line especially was lovely but apart from that I don’t know… a lot of it felt same-y, which isn’t always a bad thing but, well.
