I really wanted to love this book but it just felt a bit overly long and trying to be too many things for me.
I usually love multiple point of view and timeline but for this this one just one just didn't pull together. I genuinely think I would have liked a shorter book from opaline perspective followed by a sequel from Martha's.
I liked the lost bookshop idea and the concept but it got got bogged down in the drama and lost the magic.
More magic book shop elements needed to boost it for me. Or at least more light reprieve through the magic bookshop actions.
I am aware this may be a harsh review as I coming off a starling house book hangover though and I'm sure when we discuss it in June @thegloss book club it will get extra marks
I wanted to enjoy this but sadly I was quite bored for long stretches. The pacing was very slow and then some things that were interesting were almost glossed over. Did like the narrator though
There is nothing more frustrating than being part way through a good book series and having to wait for the third installment after a cliff hanger ending .
I saw the BBC series of this and really liked it so have been looking to read to book for a while.
I listened to this on audio and it took me a while to get into in the younger years but as the characters got older it really started to enhance the story.
This is a YA book but it covers some very serious topics, the justice system, social inequality, racism, suicide, the death penalty to name a few.
The story is told from both Sephie and Callums perspective and we get their thoughts and emotions. The inner monologue is always something you can have in books but not as easily in TV format so this does create a more emotive read rather than watch.
There were bits I didn't see coming which is always great in a read. I would definitely get the next in the series
