Egan scores big points for her non-linear storytelling. Characters' lives touch, cross, ripple... feels like my neighborhood. I love the Powerpoint Chapter....

Fun read, good suspense throughout. I recommend this book for some dark-&-stormy-night light reading. Steampunk Vampire... nice stretch there, Ace!

Well written, thorough account of the notorious island prison in the San Francisco Bay, from the Spanish Explorations of the Golden Coast through its use by the US Military as a fortress, through the penitentiary years, and the 1969 Occupation, this book is loaded with histories, photographs, diagrams, profiles, stories, legends, and copies of official documents related to the crimes, criminals, guards, wardens, and escape attempts at The Rock. Highly enjoyable if you like historical accounts, hard-boiled gangster stories, and peeking into the workings of the criminal justice system. One of my favorite coffee table textbooks.

Ah, Charles... if you had been born in our time, you'd be a blogger extraordinaire! Decadent, passionate, and misogynistic, this poet stole my heart from Edgar Allen Poe and broke it on the cobbled streets of that Eternal City. Don't come looking for a sympathetic heart...Baudelaire is bitter, despondent, and completely adorable. Read this and tell me he's not a man before his time.
