The Prison Healer by Lynette Noni

Very up and down with this one. Writing wasn't bad, but something about it left me cold. Parts felt dragged out/repetitive. I didn't get a good sense of place/atmosphere despite how much time was spent laying out the prison. Too many italicized words, and there were often times I'd forget what was happening because we were so deep in Kiva's thoughts going on tangents.I also didn't like how she was totally dependent on outside help to get through every single trial. Would've been nice to show off her quick thinking/skills rather than just Jeran saving the day yet again.
I will say, I liked the main quadrant of characters. Kiva, Tipp, Jeran and Narri had a good dynamic and I liked their interactions. The first twist is also good and enhances the dynamic. I liked seeing them all come together and stand strong despite the revelations and secrets.
That also said, I thought the very last twist was bad. It's completely incongruous with everything presented in the story. It truly feels like a last-second addition to leave the audience hanging. Not only is it a detriment to the overall package, there were already enough dangling threads to keep the reader interested. I'm willing to check out the sequel.

The Final Empire by Brandon Sanderson
Did not finish book. Stopped at 20%.

For a while, I didn't know why I wasn't getting into this. When one of the characters pulled out a whiteboard to map out their plan, it hit me: I'm reading a transcription of someone's Dungeons and Dragons session!
The constant references tosexual violence also bothered me. The book opens with a nobleman taking a young slave girl away so the dashing hero can save her, and the nondescript heroine is constantly threatened with being sold into servitude. The subject isn't given the proper significance/gravity it deserves. Considering the author's background and the overall tone of a swashbuckling, escapist fantasy, I found that especially incongruous. Let's leave it at that.
Sanderson is a lot like Counter Strike or Taylor Swift; massively popular, and I understand why, but I just can't stand him.

Marissa Meyer has my heart in a stranglehold.
I think I have to give the edge to this over Instant Karma, even though I adore both. The comics are absolutely adorable and Jude is literally me.

Parts of this have certainly aged (three guesses what I'm referring to here), but I had a lot of fun. I knew the cliff notes, but this provides a good overview of the creation of Star Wars and what influenced Lucas. Also goes into detail about the fandom and why Star Wars is such an enduring phenomenon.

Some good moments/characters and a lot of flaws add up to...alright. I think it would've been better if the main characters were 18 rather than 24-ish. I imagined Callahan as Cal Kestis.

A very nothing book. The typical refrain is 'fans of the show will like it', but I don't think that applies. It lacks any intrigue or shocking moments, it's full of run on sentences and bad prose, and it doesn't enhance the world at all. The main villain is established as a Machiavellian mastermind who gets duped repeatedly by a group of college aged hippies. Granted, that's on brand for the show, but the more grounded/serious tone makes it come off as goofy rather than charming.
I will say, they nailed the portrayal of reading Lord of the Rings; it takes the protagonist almost a full year, and multiple characters agree the Tom Bombadil sections are nonsense.

I liked the characters and most of the story beats. The big problem was Mann's writing style. Too many odd phrases, repetitive words, run on sentences. It wasn't all bad, but it was enough of a problem to drag down the experience.

What you get if you threw Tweet Cute, Today, Tonight, Tomorrow, and She Drives Me Crazy into a blender. Or, more aptly, a baking tray. Writing was uneven at points, but overall very sweet. Ben Kenobi and Reese's Pieces had great chemistry. The finale was hilarious.
Last book I read in 2024. Not as good as 2022 or 2023, but let's wrap it up.

I didn’t hate Solo. I was surprised by how quickly this moved. Short and punchy, with a nice triumvirate of main characters. Nails Han's characterization as well as the atmosphere of Corellia and the surrounding environments.
